There exists a psychological phenomenon in which perfectly sane people, with no desire to die, find themselves faced with a steep cliff and experience a strong desire to leap. To jump from their safe vantage point into the unknown. This phenomenon is so common in fact, that the french have a term for it: L’appel du Vide – Call of the Void.

Four Months of Travel
I say this every month – But Holy Cow, it’s been four months. The trip is already well over halfway done. So what did I do in this fourth month of travel? Shannon and I kicked off the month by flying down to Kerela for our first taste of Southern India. Last month, we mainly explored Northern India so it was a nice change of scenery (and pace) to see the south. Sadly, we didn’t have as much time to explore as we would have liked but we did get to do one major highlight that I had been looking … Read More
Misadventure Monday: Peter and Susana from “Always Twirling”
This post is part of a L’appel Du Vide feature, Misadventure Mondays. In each segment, I’ll ask one of my favorite travel bloggers to share one of their Travel Misadventures. This Monday, Peter and Susana from Always Twirling share their story of a miserable bus ride through Thailand. Tell me a little about yourself and your current trip: We are a married couple that got tired of filling our bank accounts with money but having no time to spend it. We decided to stop dreaming and start doing and quit our jobs to travel the world. We are currently on a year-long trip around … Read More
Bangkok River Boat Ride
As you can imagine for a city with a river running through the center, Bangkok is home to many boats and one of the best ways to see the city is by hiring a boat to take you through some of the back canals. The first part of the trip brought us down the main strip of the river which is dotted with high rise hotels and office buildings with the occasional temple pagoda peeking up between them. Once we got into the back canals we started to see the other side of the city. Its amazing how different things … Read More
Jim Thompson House
Jim Thompson House The Jim Thompson House in Bangkok is the former home of a famous expat who made his home in Thailand as a silk producer. In addition to the store which sells Jim Thompson silk products, the site also serves as a museum of Jim Thompson’s beautiful house and gardens. Cafe at Jim Thompson House Garden at Jim Thompson House The house was designed and built by Jim Thompson in Thailand about 50 years ago. He combined several traditional Thai wooden houses to create the large spacious home on display today. In addition, he spent many years … Read More
Bangkok Temples
Statue in Wat Arun Bangkok is home to several famous Buddhist temples. Although not very old, they are still extremely beautiful with very interesting architecture. The two temples we visited, Wat Arun and Wat Pho sit on opposite banks of the Chao Phraya river which runs through Bangkok. Wat Arun from across the river In order to get to War Arun, you must take a boat to the other side of the river. The river is dotted with boatmen for hire in addition to a ferry specifically designed to take tourists to Wat Arun. Boats on the Chao Phraya river … Read More
Outside Bangkok
Elephant ride outside Bangkok We spent one day doing things in the countryside around Bangkok. We hired a driver and guide to take us to the floating market, the “tiger temple,” an elephant ride, and the bridge over the River Kwai. Water Buffalo cooling off After the floating market, we went to the tiger temple. Unfortunately, it seemed to be set up entirely for tourists and it was questionable how well the animals were treated. There are many websites dedicated to this discussion, so I won’t get into it, but needless to say, the only reason to go is if … Read More
Markets of Thailand
Vendors at a Thai floating market I have always loved large outdoor markets. There is something about the hustle and bustle of the crowds, mixed with the many different things to eat, see and buy that makes it an extremely fun way to spend a day. Thailand has some amazing and unique markets that I was super excited to visit. Although most have them have gotten a bit touristy, they are still such an unusual experience that they are totally worth a visit (or two).1. JJ Market The entrance to Jatuchak Market Our first day in Bangkok we went to … Read More
Four Nights in Bangkok
Statue at Wat Arun in Thailand In Christmas 2009, my parents were still living abroad, so instead of spending more time in Japan, my family and I went to Bangkok for a few days between. We were only there for a few days, so we only got to really see the main Bangkok sites. But it was one of the coolest places I’ve ever been. I can’t wait to go back to the area of the world and explore some of the other parts of Thailand and Cambodia. Bangkok was HOT, I mean really really hot. Luckily we were there … Read More
