There exists a psychological phenomenon in which perfectly sane people, with no desire to die, find themselves faced with a steep cliff and experience a strong desire to leap. To jump from their safe vantage point into the unknown. This phenomenon is so common in fact, that the french have a term for it: L’appel du Vide – Call of the Void.

July in Review
Today is the last day of the month which means its time to wrap up July with the normal monthly summary. July was a fairly quite month as I prepared for my upcoming round the world trip, but I did get a chance to visit Rehoboth Beach, Annapolis, MD and Durham, NC - all of which are close enough to DC to be weekend trips. I also got a chance to celebrate July 4th right here in the District. I don’t always share things from these smaller trips on the blog, but you can always “like” my Facebook page to get updates and photos … Read More

Misadventure Monday with “Ryan from Travel and Graphs”
This post is part of a L’appel Du Vide feature, Misadventure Mondays. In each segment, I’ll ask one of my favorite travel bloggers to share one of their Travel Misadventures. This Monday, Ryan from “Travel and Graphs” shares his story of a crazy road trip. Current Trip Currently my nomad factor is about zero. I have a summer job in Yellowstone National Park doing office work and inventory control for the maintenance guys here. Before that, I traveled from January to late May living out of a 1992 Previa van. Going from a completely vagabond lifestyle to this kind of intense … Read More

Choosing Electronics for My RTW Trip
Whenever I travel, packing is always an issue – especially with a trip this size. As I mentioned on my RTW to-do list, one of the issues I’m been struggling with is choosing which electronics to bring with me for my RTW trip. There are so many new and helpful gadgets out there – the trouble is figuring out which ones will be helpful and which one are just going to be a burden (literally). The Contenders: Digital Camera -I already own a digital camera, but its not that great since I bought it second hand in Cambodia after I … Read More
Reaching my RTW savings goal
Yesterday, I discussed my RTW budget and how I had tracked my savings over the course of the past 8 months. Whenever I tell people about my trip, they always ask how much money I am budgeting and then respond with something along the lines of: “Wow, did your parents give you money?” “You must have been saving forever!” “Are you a drug dealer?” Well, no. My parents didn’t foot my RTW bill, I’m not a drug dealer and I haven’t been saving for this trip forever. However, I have been working hard to save every possible penny since I … Read More
My RTW Budget
A few days ago, I shared with you my itinerary for our upcoming round the world trip. To summarize: it involves long train rides and intense treks through multiple countries over several months. As you may have guessed, a trip of this size isn’t free… and it isn’t cheap. Luckily we do have a few things going for us: For the most part, we are traveling through Asia which is relatively cheap We are traveling as a pair (sometimes more) so we can share on accommodations, food, etc. We are planning on budget travel – hostels, overnight trains, street food. … Read More
Misadventure Monday: Jess and Dani from the “Globetrotter Girls”
This post is part of a L’appel Du Vide feature, Misadventure Mondays. In each segment, I’ll ask one of my favorite travel bloggers to share one of their Travel Misadventures. This Monday, Jess and Dani from “Globetrotter Girls” share their run in with a cow in India. Tell me a little about yourselves and your current trip? We are a German-American couple who packed up our London apartment and left to travel in April 2010, and have been on the road ever since. From London we flew to Las Vegas and started our adventure in Sin City. Since then we … Read More

The Bird Meets World RTW To-Do List
I’m in the final trip countdown. Less than a month until Shannon and I set off to Russia. However, despite all of this I still have a ton to do. And now, that I’ve gone public with my trip I can share my ever growing to do list. Get Visas: China Russia India Despite all my complaining about the Russia Visa process, we actually already got our Russian Visas. So score one for the good guys (us- if that wasn’t obvious). My passport is currently at the Chinese Embassy awaiting a China Visa. Fingers, toes and everything else crossed. I’ll be sharing … Read More
My RTW Itinerary
Yesterday, I gave you all the details of the who, what ,when, and where of the “Bird Meets World” tour. Okay…maybe not ALL the details. I revealed pretty much nothing about my trip Itinerary. Well, no worries – today I’m spilling all the beans. (Well the beans that I know about). A word about planning In the world of travel there are many philosophies on trip planning. Some argue that all you need is a one way plane ticket and a passport. Others claim that each day should be meticulously scheduled. However, for the most part, people seem to lean … Read More

It’s All Happening
Confession: I’ve been keeping a secret from you all. A pretty big one. Well, big in the world of travel blogging which probably makes it not that big at all. But, the time has come to reveal my secret. (Warning: This post contains a lot of somewhat bizzare and only tangentally related multi-media) You might want to grab a seat. Because I’m coming out. I want the world to know. And because I wanted an excuse to include a video of this song. And yes, I know I could have included the orginal but then I remembered this semi-awkward gem … Read More
